Dangers of Soda
It has been demonstrated that there is a direct link between tooth decay and soda soft drinks. But sugar is not the only ingredient that causes problems with teeth – the acids in soda causes etching of the enamel which can lead to decay. Acid begins to affect tooth enamel in only 20 minutes. 56% of 8 year old children drink soda daily and a third of teenage boys drink at least three cans of soda a day. Soda provides more added sugar in a child’s diet than cookies, candies and ice cream combined. According to the US Department of Agriculture, kids are heavy consumers of soft drinks and are consuming them at unprecedented rates. But, adults are also large consumers of soda! The American Hygienist Association also reports that “50% of Americans do not receive regular oral health care.”
